In some cases, the diagnosis of a foot problem requires more than a visual examination by your podiatrist.

It may also not be possible to identify a break or fracture from a hands-on assessment of the foot or leg.

The option then is to initiate diagnostic imaging. This could include foot and ankle x-rays, or alternatively musculoskeletal ultrasounds of the foot and ankle. Once the images are produced it is much easier for your podiatrist to provide a detailed explanation of your foot health issue, together with a suggested course of remedial action.

Imaging is most helpful in diagnosing conditions that include fractures, osteoarthritis, tendon and ligament injuries, and muscle strains. Having detailed images assists in ruling out other possible conditions and ensures that the treatment plan is specific to the diagnosed condition.
